A chart for placing ladders every fourth column of stitches, for stitch counts from 15 to 50

This is the placement chart mentioned in the TECHknitting post of December 19, 2010, good for scarves of stitch count 15-50 sts wide, showing the placement for dropping stitches every fourth column.  Locate the stitch count of your scarf in the R column, then follow the directions for the number of stitches to slip and to drop.  In this way, your columns will be centered as best as possible across the width of your scarf.

Remember, dropping a stitch every fourth column means that three columns of UNdropped stitches lay between each column of dropped stitches.


15 st: *slip 3, drop 1, repeat from * 2 times, sl 3: 3 total columns dropped, 3 sts at R edge, 3 st at left edge
16 sts: *slip 3, drop 1, repeat from * 2 times, sl 4: 3 total columns dropped, 3 sts at R edge, 4 st at left edge
17 sts: slip 4, drop 1, * slip 3, drop 1, repeat from * once, slip 4: 3 total columns dropped, 4 st at R edge, 4 sts at left edge
18 sts: slip 4, drop 1, * slip 3, drop 1, repeat from * once, slip 5: 3 total columns dropped, 4 st at R edge, 5 sts at left edge


19 st: *slip 3, drop 1, repeat from * 3 times, sl 3: 4 total columns dropped, 3 sts at R edge, 3 st at left edge

Thanks for this great post! Can you please explain the formula you used to create the table. For example, if I have 120 stitches, what would the ratio be? Or should I just choose the largest divisor that fits (in this case, 40) from your chart?
